I never wanted to be an engineer

*Gokulnath is pursuing a course in English from Shiv Nadar University

I have always been clear that I wanted to pursue education in my life, I’m very interested in writing. Unfortunately I never had the drive to follow through with my dreams. I want to be a writer or a professor. I still remember the first book I read and the impact it had on me – that is what I want to do, I want to impact others. After I graduated school, a series of external pressures along with my own confusion led me to take up mechanical engineering in university, but I never loved the course and that made university life hard for me. After 2.5 years I finally decided to switch from engineering to humanities, it was a difficult decision because a lot of people in my life were not comfortable with it. But I can proudly say I am much happier now, I want to write and I want to teach. Currently my goal is to establish myself in the field of social anthropology, I want to be an academician and a writer. In the future I hope to work with government agencies that are in the field of agrarian or development anthropology – it is here that I feel I can make a difference in other people’s lives.
